How Safe is Your Sit to Stand Desk? [Video]

The importance of safety and quality in height adjustable tables and workstations, by Bruce Wells.

image

They have arrived. After years of toe-in-the-water contemplation by real estate and facilities executives, height adjustable workstations are now being specified for everyone.

I won’t comment on the associated health benefits, which individuals rely upon to offset the negative impacts of “sitting too much.” Height adjustability in the workplace can’t hurt, right?

Or can it?

As someone who has developed height adjustable solutions for clients over many years, I can confidently say that customers now seem to be committing to these workstations because they are suddenly more affordable. Competition has made them affordable. But competition has also driven many manufacturers in a race to the bottom regarding quality, functionality, and most disconcertingly, safety.

We demand that machine operators, carpenters and electricians be properly certified in their field of work to ensure their own safety as well the safety of others. However, we provide only optional guidelines to the soon-to-be millions of motorized desk operators in the US.

There are some products on the market with built-in sensors to stop and reverse the operation of an adjustable desk upon contact with an obstruction - whether an object or worse, a human obstruction like hands and fingers. At Innovant, we refuse to compromise safety and have made this capability standard for all our adjustable height products. This anti-collision technology was initially developed to protect the motor within the desk, but it offers a significant safety feature for users. Of course, a feature like this costs a little bit more.

Not only do furniture RFPs rarely indicate this as a mandatory performance requirement, few people ever ask what level of anti-collision sensitivity is built into the products they buy because they don’t know what a “safe level” means. As a result, we now have an influx of questionable quality machinery, (particularly from low-cost manufacturing regions) getting incorporated into furniture here in the US. These come with little to no collision sensitivity built in - all in an effort to make “health conscious” furniture “affordable.”

Accidents are usually rare in a data pool. But when the numbers of that pool grow as we reach millions of motorized, adjustable height pieces of furniture, it’s time to start asking questions about the safety expectations of these products.

CoreNet NYC 2013 Golf Outing

image

This year, Innovant’s Vice President of Sales, Bob Driscoll, teamed up with our A&D Marketing Representative, Hayley Willson, to participate in a foursome that played at Century Country Club for CoreNet’s Annual Golf Outing. We asked Bob to dish on the event that took place Monday, July 15 at both Century and Old Oaks Country Club. See his take on the outing below:

“HOT, HOT, HOT is the best way to describe the recent CoreNet event we attended. The event saw a great turn out, which included NYC marketplace end-users and top people in the Furniture, Construction, and Technology Industries.

Given the heat - 100+ degrees - I expected some cancellations for the golf round, but turnout was so great that the two courses were packed with players. During the round, they held the usual contests - longest drive, closest to pin, low net, and low gross. We came up empty, but it was all for a really good cause, helping build homes for our injured soldiers.

We hosted clients in our foursome and the feedback we received from them was both a very nice "thank you” and a “let’s do it again.” We all had a very good time.

After golf, we gathered for a refreshing cocktail and dinner reception.  Hayley and Bruce Wells, Innovant’s Director of Marketing & Development, enjoyed connecting with a lot of new people as both recently joined CoreNet. We all considered the day a great success.“

The Benefits of Height Adjustable Desks

Tired of sitting down all day?” This is the opening question posed in a recent Business Insider article, Here’s Why Standing At Your Desk Could Be a Better Way to Work, by Megan Reynolds. Citing studies that show “moving around improves circulation, posture and brain function,” Reynolds states “offices where employees sit down all day are inhibiting staff from working to their full potential.”

In order to counteract the negative effects of sitting at a desk all day, Reynolds offers the height-adjustable desk as an ideal solution “where people can sit or stand without leaving their workstation.” With Innovant’s adjustable FORm_office bench, the simple touch of a button raises and lowers the work surface, allowing users to work at any height.

“Although they are not mainstream yet, height-adjustable desks have become more popular across a broad range of industries over the last 12 months,” Reynolds states. This popularity stems from such factors as the health benefits and productivity-boosting effects of standing while you work.

Celebrating Innovant’s Partnership with Arenson
Last week, Innovant hosted a sales meeting under the guise of a wine and cheese event. The gathering marked the kickoff of the new partnership between Innovant and Arenson , a New York City dealer of contract furniture and architectural interiors products.  Arenson is now one of Innovant’s three preferred dealers in the New York City market for all non-trading desk client environments.
Arenson’s President, Carl Milanta, brought together his team members from the New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut offices. This afforded our four separate offices the opportunity to socialize over in-depth product demonstrations. We know that the success of the event foretells a fruitful partnership between our two companies.

DOES GREAT DESIGN AFFECT PRODUCTIVITY?

DOES GREAT DESIGN AFFECT PRODUCTIVITY?
Mary Pat Wallace, Chicago Regional Account Executive

Last year I had the privilege of working with Perkins + Will on a new work
environment for one of Chicago’s prominent trading firms. After months
of mock ups and revisions the client chose Innovant’s FORm_office S120
and S4 to serve as a single platform through out their office. The trading
floor utilized the organic nature of S120 to help compliment the nature of
the work being done in the space. S4, FORm office’s linear line was used in the administrative departments where they benefited from a cleaner organized layout.  The client’s former space (the Federal Reserve Bank building) was heavy in feeling and dark in its design and atmosphere.

The client was ready to change and change drastically. The design
team at Perkins + Will, headed by Tim Wolfe, was on a mission to give
this firm an out of the box solution. Their challenge was to respond to
the needs of a brilliant and creative IT team, the vision of the owner, the
needs of the employees and to deliver this on time and within budget.
Mission accomplished, Interior Design published the space in July 2011
“Money Talks Quietly” and Contract magazine published it in Jan/Feb
2012 Interiors Awards “Confidential Trading Floor”. The overall design
has been well received and for many has changed the way they see the
trading floor.

But what about the people that go to work there every day, how has it
changed their lives? I had the opportunity to discover at my son’s hockey
game that yes, the work of Perkins + Will did change their employees
attitude and productivity drastically. An unsolicited glowing review came
from an employee who said, “the employees get to work earlier, stay
later and overall the firm is more productive.” I’m really proud to have consulted on this workspace.  I feel this project with the clean, intelligent, and tailored aesthetic of FORm office in conjunction with the amazing interior architecture and overall strategy from Perkins + Will can be used as a way to approach all clients to change the way they approach the office environment and design.  It is clear the benefits could not be greater.  I encourage everyone to ask their clients, “Will your new office space make a difference in your life? ”

S4 Featured in February’s Issue of Contract Magazine

In this month’s issue of Contract Magazine, FORm_office is featured in the 33rd Annual Interiors Awards for large offices with Perkins + Will. Innovant provided over 350 workstations helping create a beautiful, tranquil, open plan environment in the heart of Chicago.

Throughout the space one key element that allows the traders  to connect their work with their office surroundings is through their desk. It is the single element where the technology and organic nature of the floor meet at a single point. Innovant’s FORm_office S120 desks were picked as the perfect medium to connect these two opposing elements together. The desks extend the organic nature of the office beyond just the solid structural walls, by seamlessly integrating the core elements of the business with the design aesthetic envisioned for the space. They combine both the white and maple surfaces used for the ceiling and walls to create a single platform, which wraps around the entire floor to connect the entire space. Managing Principal Tom Kasznia from Perkins + Will said, “Natural elements, for example how water flows, gave us ideas for shape clustered desking systems for all open office areas allowing for one aesthetic to create a visual flow. The fully system addresses the traders’ needs specifically.” The S120 desk greatly appealed to a space, which was designed around these structural columns, as its flexible nature allowed for it to be conformed to the layout of the design.

Innovant desks help speak to the concept that this workplace “values tranquility” and works to create harmony between technology and the end user. The sculptural like shape of S120 helps inspire those who sit at it. Employing organic accents help remind people of the natural elements in life beyond the working walls.

Evolution and Impact of STEEL

Thank you Arch Daily for this amazing infographic about the Impacts of Steel.

“One of the most important milestones in architecture was the development of construction methods in iron and steel. With these methods we have been able to construct stronger and taller structures, while using less materials. The evolution of steel frame construction in the 20th century entirely changed the concept of wall and the support.”

Innovant’s FORm products have a steel structure made up of over 25% post-industrial recycled content. By using a strong frame work our products are able to live multiple lifecycles and reused in new offices, before being disassembled and recycled.
